Inspired By Life

When was the last time you truly enjoyed the life you live? I'm talking about that moment when you just sat back, reflected on your life and said to yourself: "Man, am I living!"When was the last time you did that?

To be honest, I don't think I myself have ever done that. I mean, every day I go through the day just for the sake of making it through the 24-hours that it has to offer in one piece, nothing more. Something happened a few weekends ago though, or should I rather say that "someone" happened, that made me start thinking about life in a whole new light...

Ironically, the "someone" who made me start thinking in that new light went by the name "Life". I met Life at a get-together we had a couple of weekends ago with a few friends from college. It was a chilled session, you know one of those days when we just get together to enjoy each other's company and just talk about everything and anything that isn't college-related. I was a bit intrigued to see a face that I had never seen at college but which looked so familiar to me. This face later on went to recite a poem that had me so close to tears it was actually scary. That's how touched I was by this poem, and you have to understand that this was quite something for me because as much as I am a fan of writing, I couldnt care less for poetry, so it was really a HUGE thing! The whole time while I was listening to him, all I kept thinking of was how familiar this person looked.. Then it hit me..!

One lazy Sunday afternoon as I was making my way from town, this guy had sat next to me in the taxi! Now this doesn't mean that I'm going to start writing on my blog about every random person that I end up sitting next to in a taxi. The thing that really stuck out to me about this guy is that he took the time to listen to a homeless man begging for taxi fare, a white man at that, and even had the liberty of  actually giving him enough to catch a ride in the taxi.

Maybe that might be the norm for some of you, but this gesture of kindness really stuck out to me, because all the times when I have been to town, I usually see the black people ignoring white beggars. It might just be that they have gotten tired of seeing the same people loitering around and begging every day or I happen to see only the busiest people every time I go to town, people who are too busy to even pause just to give a rand to a man in need, who knows...

Either way, whatever the case may be, this guy made a good impression on me, such a good impression that I just had to remind him of that incident after his recital. Everything about this guy, his aura, his care-free yet outgoing nature, just oozed positivity.

He is one of those people who you can see are aware of all the pain and strife there is out there, and I'm sure he has had his fair share of both, but he's still living life and enjoying it at it's best! Now that's a person I would definitely look up to!

I know this whole post is starting to sound a bit obsessive but you have to understand the realization that that weekend made me wake up to. I woke up to the realization that I am obsessed with life, not the poet, but LIFE itself, that's what it is...

Its people and moments like that one that make me grateful for the life I live and the people I have in my life. They make life worth living for...
