Realism 101

When you used to think of adulthood, what was the first word that usually popped into your head? Although I can't exactly call myself an adult as of yet, I'm only 19 after all, but I think I can safely refer to myself as a young adult, and I have to say that as far as I have seen, young adulthood isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I remember when I was filling in a college survey earlier this year, I came to a question which said: "What do you expect a typical work day to be like?". My answer was: A 9-to-5 job where I get to wear "power suits" and then come back home, kick off my heels, make dinner, pour myself a glass of wine and enjoy it in the comfort of a warm bubble bath. Then later, I would curl up on the couch with a good book, preferably something by Danielle Steel or Penny Vincenzi and read away. Then I thought to myself: "How many working class people can actually say that that's how they end a working day"?

Sometimes we make the mistake of not thinking realistically. Reality is, I might one day come home to be greeted by a pile of dirty dishes accompanied by a scurry of larger-than-life roaches, and worst of all, a geyser that has gone way beyond cold by the time get home. Not the most amusing scenario to come home to, is it?

Reality is, nobody ever gets what they truly expect out of life.
Reality is, I might never drive that BMW or that Merc.
Reality is, I might not get that dream job in Cape town.
Reality is, I might never own that penthouse in Sandton, yet I keep on dreaming. I keep on aspiring for things further than the bridge of my nose.

Whether you choose to admit it or not, we all have that one dream that manages to sit at the back of our minds and hover right before eyes, all at the same time. It nags at our very being, day and night. Even in our imaginations we know that it is but a pipe-dream, that's what it is, yet we keep holding on to it. We keep on wishing that one day... Yes, one day, it will happen...

Maybe one day it will...
